Katy Perry may be fostering a very s**y and provocative image as a performer today but believe it or not, she was raised differently. As you enjoy all Katy Perry songs, you should also take some time to know her to love her more. Born as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, she was the middle child of a pastor (her father) and an evangelist (her mother). She was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California by very conservative parents who prevented her from hearing mainstream pop music.
Logically, Perry had Christian education and upbringing as a child. Her first performances were as part of church choir when she was 9 years old until she reached 17. She practically grew up hearing nothing but gospel songs. Fortunately, her parents realized her singing talent at an early age so she was sent to voice lessons during her late childhood to teenage years.
At age 15, she was noticed by Christian rock veterans who come from Nashville, Tennessee. They brought her to Nashville to hone her songwriting talent and guitar playing skills. There, the young Perry began recording demos. Soon, she was signed up by Red Hill, a Christian music label. During the same year (2001), she recorded her very first album, ‘Katy Hudson,’ a self-titled CD comprising of gospel rock songs.
Her debut album did not make it big. The record label also ceased operating that time. When she turned 17, she left for Los Angeles. There, she met Glen Ballard, who produced Alanis Morissette’s hit album ‘Jagged Little Pill.’ They worked for an album, which was set for release in 2005. At the same time, Perry decided to change her artist name into Katy Perry, reportedly because ‘Katy Hudson’ was almost always mistaken for ‘Kate Hudson.’
Again, the album was a disappointment in terms of sales and performance in charts. Perry was immediately dropped by her label, The Island Def Jam Music Group. She was soon signed by Columbia Records but was not given her break. As expected, she was dropped by the label in 2006. But she was undeterred. She then impressed Jason Flom, chairman of Virgin Records.
In 2007, she was signed by then newly established Capitol Music Group, the merger between Capitol and Virgin. In her first album with the company, she was made to collaborate with song writer and producer Dr. Luke for many of those signature Katy Perry songs. Together, they produced hit songs like ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ which became the carrier single of her album ‘One of the Boys,’ and ‘Hot n Cold.’
‘One of the Boys’ was released in June 2008 and helped her break through the music industry barriers. It was not just a commercial success; it also earned positive reviews from music critics. In 2010, she released her next album ‘Teenage Dream.’ It was so huge that it established her as the first female recording artist in 11 years to release three consecutive No. 1 tracks from the same album.
Everything has turned out well for Perry since then. She already has her own fragrance line, Purr. She appeared as guest in several TV shows and even movies. In 2012, her 3D concert-biopic was distributed by Paramount Pictures worldwide. Katy Perry was also declared as Billboard’s Woman of 2012.
Perry's commercial breakthrough came when she released her first mainstream studio album One of the Boys (2008). This was preceded by the release of her first single "I Kissed a Girl". Other singles included "Hot n Cold", "Thinking of You" and "Waking Up in Vegas". Perry embarked on the Hello Katy Tour in support of the album. She followed this up with her second studio effort Teenage Dream which was an instant commercial success, topping the album charts in several countries. It spawned five number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100—"California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T." and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"; it became the first album in history recorded by a female artist to achieve this, and the second album after Michael Jackson's Bad (1987). In support of the album, she embarked on the California Dreams Tour.[2] Teenage Dream was followed by a re-release titled The Complete Confection that spawned an additional number one, "Part of Me".
Perry has received numerous awards and nominations; she has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and was named by Billboard as 2012's Woman of the Year.[3] She has sold 11 million albums and 75 million digital tracks worldwide.[4][5] Perry remains the only artist to spend 69 consecutive weeks in the top ten of the Hot 100.[6] Perry has ventured into celebrity endorsement and released her signature fragrance Purr. She made her film debut voicing Smurfette in The Smurfs (2011). Perry was ranked at number fourteen on Billboard's list of top moneymakers of 2011, grossing more than $11 million.[7] She was spotlighted in her own 3D biopic-concert film Part of Me (2012), which concentrated on her life as a touring artist and the breakdown of her one-year marriage to British comedian Russell Brand.
