Tennis star Maria Sharapova has a lot going for her. At only 18 years of age she has become the world's highest paid female athlete. Born in Nyagan, Russia, (in the Siberian region) on April 19, 1987, she began playing tennis at a very young age. By the time she was nine she had moved to Bradenton, Florida, (where she currently resides) to train at Nick Bollettieri's Tennis Academy. Aside from helping to hone Sharapova's skills, Bollettieri is also responsible for the success of many other tennis stars, such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, and Venus and Serena Williams.

Sharapova began climbing the ranks in the World Tennis Association (WTA), earning her first tournament title in Japan in 2003. Her crowning moment came in 2004, when she won Wimbledon at a mere 17 year of age, solidifying a consistent spot in the top five. Off the court she is known for her looks. She often takes modeling jobs and works on her endorsements, the likes of which include Motorola, Canon and Honda Japan. The attractive six-foot-tall blond often draws comparisons to fellow Russian tennis-pro-turned-model Anna Kournikova, but her skills on the court are what set the two apart.

In just the past two years she has become the poster child for women's tennis. Billboards promoting the sport feature giant images of Sharapova as "Maria Mania" sweeps the globe. She has become the top-draw in the sport, ushering in a new era of rising stars and helping to broaden the field after years of Williams sisters' dominance. 2005 finds Sharapova on pace to take in over $20 million, most of which will come from her endorsements--the most recent a three-year $6 million deal with Colgate-Palmolive. But it is tennis where her focus lies. She carries with her a streak of 17 straight wins on grass heading into Wimbledon 2005, where she will defend her 2004 championship at the prestigious event.

According to the LA Times and Orange County Register, Maria said at a press conference she has grown a few cm this year and is now 6' 2". She's been having back pains and has had to pull out of some tournaments due to the pain which she thinks is from a growth spurt.

After a successful stint as a model, Fox eventually graduated to television with recurring roles on "Hope and Faith" (ABC, 2003-06). But it was her breakout role via Michael Bay's summer blockbuster "Transformers" which helped position her as the "new Angelina Jolie." She certainly had the attitude, looks and tattoos for it. Born Megan Denise Fox in Rockwood, TN on May 16, 1986, she was the daughter of a former tourism director for Roane County, and though a self-confessed tomboy, began exploring acting and dance at the age of five. After relocating to St. Petersburg, FL, she continued her training throughout high school, and soon added modeling to her list of endeavors. A string of wins at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention convinced her to launch her acting career, so she wasted no time moving to Los Angeles while only 16. Fox made her screen debut as a bratty heiress in the Olsen Twins feature "Holiday in the Sun" (2001), where she was billed under her full name in the closing credits.

Television was her exclusive domain for the next few years, most notably on a Swedish-produced soap opera, "Ocean Ave." (Syndicated, 2002-03). But she returned to films with a supporting role as Lindsay Lohan's chief rival in the bubbly comedy "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (2004). Not realizing movie stardom was right around the corner, she revisited television as the ditzy but sweet-natured daughter of Faith Ford on the sitcom "Hope and Faith" (ABC, 2003-06). The recurring role earned her a Young Artists Award nomination in 2005.

In 2007, Fox was suddenly catapulted to stardom as the female lead of the Steven Spielberg-produced "Transformers," based on the popular toy line and animated television series of the early 1980s. Cast opposite fellow newcomer Shia LaBeouf, Fox played yet another in her long line of popular girls, although this one offered some character wrinkles in the form of extensive automotive knowledge, which later came in handy during the film's climactic battle. Director Michael Bay sought to blunt Fox's fragile screen persona by requiring her to gain ten pounds of muscle prior to shooting, and bolstered the physical exhaustion required of her character by continually announcing long night shoots. The approach - though draconian - appeared to work. Critics found her a believable action heroine, and she netted several pop movie award nominations, including a 2008 nod from the MTV Movie Awards for Breakthrough Performance.

"Transformers'" key audience - young adult males - was also taking notice of Fox, though not for her acting ability. The buzz surrounding her appearance in the film led to a barrage of photo shoots for male-oriented magazines like Maxim, GQ and FHM - the latter of which named her the "Sexiest Woman in the World" in 2008 - and all of which devoted numerous pages to Fox in various states of undress, highlighting her growing collection of tattoos. The inevitable comparisons to another raven-haired actress with full, pouty lips, tattoos and a wild side were inevitable. In fact, such were the comparisons to Angelina Jolie, Fox was rumored as the replacement for the globe-trotting actress in the "Tomb Raider" film franchise, though reports from 20th Century Fox would dismiss the claim. Her comments in interviews - like her revelation that she had pursued a relationship with a female stripper while still in her teens - certainly helped to fan the publicity fire building around her, as did provocative paparazzi shots with her longtime boyfriend, "Beverly Hills, 90210" (Fox, 1990-2000) actor Brian Austin Green.

However, Fox's return to acting after the explosive response to "Transformers" was somewhat anticlimactic. "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" (2008), based on the best-selling memoir of Toby Young's tenure at Vanity Fair, cast Fox as a model and lust object for Young's stand-in (Simon Pegg). The film opened to strong box office in England, but disappeared quickly after a brief stint in North American theaters. Still, Fox's strong presence in the media kept interest on a steady boil, and her participation in several high profile projects quickly raised the temperature. "Transformers: Rise of the Fallen" (2009) was the most obvious of these, but other action-oriented features seemed to indicate that Fox and her handlers were seeking to push her away from the glossy roles of her past. She followed with the Diablo Cody-penned "Jennifer's Body" (2009), which offered her another about-face as the title character, a cruel cheerleader who begins picking off the local boys in her small town after becoming possessed by a blood-drinking demon.

Though in the running for the third film in the "Transformers" franchise, Fox soon found herself cast out after criticizing Bay in Wonderland magazine, comparing the director's methods on set to Napoleon and Hitler. Bay soon began a search for her replacement, a decision that was easier to make following the financial failure of "Jennifer's Body." In May 2010, Fox failed to pick up her option for the third film, leaving her out in the cold. Meanwhile, "Jonah Hex," based on the cult Marvel Comics series, cast Fox as a gun-toting mistress of the Old West. Because the movie was an unmitigated flop right out of the gate, there were calls among her critics that perhaps her fledgling career in movies was in trouble. Meanwhile, she appeared in "Fathom" (2010) another feature inspired by a graphic novel, cast her as a young amnesiac recruited by the American military for her underwater abilities. The feature also served as her debut in the producer's chair. She finally received some good publicity when it was announced that Fox and Green were married in Hawaii on June 24, 2010 in a beach ceremony.

Asha Bhosle is born on September 8, 1933. She is one of the best-known and highly regarded Hindi playback singers in India Asha Bhosle was born in the small hamlet of Goar in Sangli, Bombay Presidency, into the musical family of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar, who belongs to Gomantak Maratha Samaj.

She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song Saawan Aaya for Hansraj Behl's Chunariya (1948). Her first solo Hindi film song was for the movie Raat Ki Raani (1949). Between 1948 and 1957, she sang more songs than any other playback singer, but the majority of these were in small, indistinct films--and whatever big film she got a chance to sing in, it was usually for the heroine's best friend or in a duet with bigger singers like Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt, or her own sister. And unfortunately having made an ill-advised marriage that alienated her from her family, she had no choice but to take up all available assignments to provide for her children. By the end of the 1960s, she was second only to her sister, and the two of them were the queens of Indian playback singing right through to the 1990s. However, in spite of her incredible vocal range, she was getting typecast in singing sensual songs.

My favorite kind of historical romances have heaping helpings of both history and romance; when the history shapes the romance, I am one happy camper. Sometimes this combination comes in the form of actual historical figures making an appearance, or the fictional characters engaging in actual events recorded by history. Cynthia Wright’s website offers pictures of the real life locations that inspired her recently reissued classic, You and No Other, where the hero and heroine are closely linked to King Francois I of France.

Pamela Clare’s MacKinnon’s Rangers trilogy couldn’t possibly take place at any other time or in any other place than the French and Indian War. Three sons of an exiled Highlander grow up on the colonial frontier, and when coerced into fighting on behalf of the Crown, it’s not as traditionally trained soldiers, but a new sort, the Ranger. The special forces of the eighteenth century, their stories play out in a tumultuous time in a newly emerging world.

It’s not, however, only kings and battles that make for historical verisimilitude. Some stories take a quieter but no less effective approach, concentrating on the very real effects brought about by the choices we make.

Take, for example, Cecilia Grant’s A Lady Awakened. Heroine Martha is driven to her desperate scheme by the inheritance laws of the time in which she lived. With her husband dead, Martha has no claim to what we would consider her own home, as the estate belongs to the men of the family. She’s ready to move in with her family—that is what one does, after all—until she finds out that the new owner, her husband’s lecherous brother, poses a serious threat to the female servants who keep the estate running.

A son, however, would come before a brother in the order of inheritance, keeping Martha in her home, and the female staff safe from unwanted advances they had no way to refuse. Only problem is, Martha’s not pregnant. Only nobody knows that for sure, so there’s still a chance, which comes in the form of Theo Mirkwood, another ne’er-do-well, forced to rusticate on a neighboring estate. Free intimate congress with his beautiful next door neighbor sounds like a twentysomething’s dream, but then reality sets in and things change. 

A lifelong faithful employee of the estate faces ending his life in the workhouse when his usefulness comes to an end, merely because he has no family to take him in when he can no longer earn his keep. A servant suggests that there are other ways Martha might obtain a child if she doesn’t bear  one, or if her natural child is the wrong gender. Even the difference between sitting in the third and first pew of a church matters. The romance and the history nourish and depend on each other. Take one away, and the other falls.

This appeared to be a totally artificial set-up—woman has one month to conceive a child following her husband’s death so the child, not the evil nephew, will inherit the estate. And it is, but it’s also got two rich, deeply flawed, difficult-to-love characters in the hero and heroine. I was blown away by Grant’s textured language and the resonance of historical details.

With very rare exceptions, I do not cry over books. This one I think holds the record for longest cry-fest. It’s a wonderful twist-filled book set in a post-Zombie world and the characters—again, always the characters—are nuanced and extremely knowable.

Can’t Buy Me Love by Molly O’Keefe

Coming from a literary fiction background, I am quite comfortable with difficult characters (see the Grant, above). So when a traditionally structured romance has two very difficult characters as their leads, I am hooked. This book was so good I didn’t want it to end, and yet I rushed to finish it so I could have a satisfying HEA (which I got). 2012 seems to be the Year of the Contemporary, and this book, for me, epitomizes why contemps can be so compelling.

Megan Fox Biography: Megan Denise Fox born May 16, 1986 is an American actress and model. She began her acting career in 2001, with several minor television and film roles, and played a regular role on the Hope & Faith television show.

Since helping Shia Labeouf's nerdy alter-ego Sam Witwicky pitch the world's largest tent, Fox has gone on to transcend mere movie stardom, on her way to becoming a global icon in near-record speed. With only four major Hollywood films to her credit (including this summer's Jonah Hex), Megan Fox has appeared on the cover of every major men's magazine, topped all the requisite hot lists, and is a gossip blog mainstay. But by the same token, the oceans of ink devoted to Fox have some (including Fox herself) crying oversaturation, a fact evidenced by 2009's "Megan Fox Media Blackout Day," and by her sacking from the third Tranformers film. 

Hey, at least she still has Brian Austin Green. It took two engagements, but the couple finally made it legal in June 2010. But don't worry, fellas -- these days, it's all about Rosie Huntington-Whiteley anyway.

Megan Fox's first major Hollywood film -- the Michael Bay-directed robot romp Transformers -- grossed over $700 million worldwide. Not bad for a first effort, right? How her post-Transformers career will play out remains to be seen, but after the box office dud that was Jennifer's Body -- other than the amazing kissing scene between Fox and Amanda Seyfried -- coupled with the bad reception of Jonah Hex, don't be surprised if one day you see Fox running once again from a psychotic toaster in the straight-to-DVD classic Transformers 8: The Return of the Killer Kitchen Appliances. But maybe the bombshell has a plan after all. She's taking a little time out of the spotlight right now, but she'll be back with a vengeance in 2012. Fox is slated to play a major role in Judd Apatow’s upcoming comedy, a movie that would be a spin-off of his 2007 film Knocked Up. 

Darlene Tonachio gave birth to Megan Fox in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. After her parents divorced, Fox grew up in a strict household maintained by her mother and stepfather. Fox claims that throughout her high school career, she was constantly targeted by bullies because she got along better with boys, and other girls resented her for it. Hmm, we wonder why the boys liked having her around? But in between eating lunch alone in bathroom stalls and showing boys her bra strap, Fox was taking acting classes while harboring aspirations of stardom. By 17, Fox had moved to Los Angeles, and was landing guest roles in various low-profile projects.
